The chapter has presented some of the foundations of inclusion as a
philosophy for educating students with disabilities in general education
setting. Research indicates that inclusion is a complex undertaking that can
have a positive impact on students, their teachers, and their families.
However, this impact appears to be related to educators’ willingness to
accommodate the diverse needs of students and their families. This, in turn,
depends on administrative support, resources and education that teachers receive
to implement effective inclusion program. Given these finding and the continued
commitment to educating students with disabilities in general education
classrooms, this books is intended to provide you with the knowledge, skills
and dispositions to develop and implement effective inclusions program and
create learning environment that promote the academic and behavioral/social
performance all of students. Toward these ends, it offers strategies to aid you
in providing all of your students with access to the general education
curriculum; to promote the sensitivity to and acceptance of your students’
individual challenges and differences; to help you work collaboratively with
your colleagues, families, students, and community agencies; and to assist you
in reflecting on and differentiating your teaching and curriculum to so that
all students benefit academically, behaviorally and socially.
